A French Press can be used to create a rich and flavorful cup of coffee. Flavor is compromised by the paper coffee filters used in drip-style coffee brewers. However, French presses have plungers, which push the ground beans straight to the carafe bottom. This leaves the bean’s oils within the coffee, giving it a rich flavor. To get the best flavor from old or economy model coffee machines, brew a pot of hot water prior to brewing coffee. When you’ve got a hot water pot, add your grounds, and pour that water back into your machine. This will really bring out the flavor of the coffee and ensure that it is nice and hot.
If a single brew doesn’t have your preferred flavor profile, try a blended brew made from a mix of various, but complimentary flavors. Coffee shops are usually helpful by recommending brands that blend together nicely, and usually offer samples.
Coffee beans that have been flavored are not your best option. Beans that meet either of these two conditions contain oils that are hard to remove from coffee makers and grinders. Remnants of these flavors will blend together unfavorably and distort the taste of your coffee. Rather, use cinnamon, vanilla or other fresh flavors. Bottled syrups work as well.
Be certain you know what kinds of grounds you need for the coffee you want to make. If you grind beans for espresso you should always just make a fine grind for an at-home coffee machine. Alternately, French presses work best with coarsely ground beans. Make sure you choose the right consistency.
